A/an - határozatlan névelő (egy)

• egyesszámú, megszámlálható főnév előtt: Julie is reading an English book.
  A – mássalhangzó előtt: a car
  An – magánhanzó előtt: an animal
• foglalkozások előtt: I am a doctor.

The - határozott névelő (a, az)

• something specific: The town where Tom lives is very big.
• Rivers, seas, oceans: the Mississippi, the Mediterranean
• Nationalities: the British, the Americans, the Japanese

No article

• in generalisations (általánosításokban):I like music.

Exceptions (kivételek):
I watch television but I listen to the radio and I go to the cinema.
I don't play tennis but I play the piano, the guitar, etc.

• for place names (towns, countries, mountains): London, Spain, Mount Everest

Except if it's in plural (kivéve, ha többes számban van) : The Greek Islands, The United States, The Alps
